Located in the East End of London, The Curve is a modern student accommodation building located close to a number of universities and colleges based in the capital such as the London School of Economics and Political Science, Queen Mary's & University of London.
Owned by the Student Housing Company, the building has newly refurbished common rooms and facilities that includes bike storage, entertainment areas, library, laundry rooms as well as communal kitchens.
Dextra worked with the Student Housing Company, contractor Troy Group and consultant Couch Perry Wilkes to replace existing fluorescent lighting on all floors as well as a new architectural and compliant design for the Ground and First Floor refurbishment, ready for students to move in for the new academic year.
The Solution
Chosen for the choice of coloured bezels it offers, which matched the architect’s requirements, 240 of Dextra’s Protec Fire Rated Downlight were installed in the entrance way to the building as well as the first-floor communal areas and cinema room. The Protec Fire Rated Downlight has been developed to offer customers a high-quality LED alternative to the traditional GU10 downlighter and incorporates the latest chip on board LED technology. This fixed position variant is both IP65 and fire rated.
22 Protec LED were used in the main entrance and in the gym to help increase light performance and efficiency. In the communal corridors, 547 BTEC’s were installed to help improve efficiency. The BTEC Downlight is ideal for customers who need a premium quality downlight with high quality LEDs and drivers, excellent efficiency and a five-year warranty, whilst still suiting those on a more restricted budget.
Dextra’s popular MODLED Slim was chosen for the office areas, where 10 were installed. The ModLED Slim brings an LED source that provides excellent energy efficiency and low maintenance. It provides a minimalist flat panel appearance with a homogenous lit diffuser. The highly efficient back lit design gives a superior energy efficiency and LED lifetime.
Elsewhere in the building, it was the client’s wishes to make an architectural feature of the stairwell half landings by using a black coloured fitting. The Runway Surface/Suspended was the ideal solution for this and as a result, 48 were installed in the stairwells.
To provide high quality indirect continuous lighting in the communal kitchen and cinema room variations of the AluLED was used. For the under-cabinet kitchen lighting, the AluLED 3000K version was selected. The AluLED can provide subtle coloured accents improving the ambiance of the environment. The AluLED’s sister product, the AluLED RGB was used to provide high quality indirect continuous lighting with RGB colour change in the cinema room. It is ideal for the representation of corporate or symbolic colours in both indoor and outdoor applications.
