A2, S1, D0 EN 13501-1 Fire rated glass balustrade
Fire rating for glass balustrade can seem difficult to understand.
We have written this to help you understand fire-rating codes and the achievements of our products.
Our fire-rating test reports and rating are available here.
Why have we had our products fire rated?
In 2018 the regulations have changed to increase the requirements from products that will be used at 11m and higher. As a response the tragic Grenfell Tower fire, these regulations are mandatory to increase the safety of buildings and reduce the spread of fire.
For any project that involves residential living space above 11 meters high (or over the 3rd story), be aware that to comply with fire safety regulations, a fire-rated balustrade will need to be used throughout the entire project, not just above the 11-meter mark.
To be installed our products must now meet EN13501-1 as standard and have fire rating for installation over 11m high.
Achieving the A2, S1, D0 EN13501-1, POSIone and POSIglaze can be installed at 11+ high. We have tested each induvial component, not only the channel as a whole system, ensuring it’s the safest we could provide.
You can read more about that here (fire testing blog)
Pure Vista’s rating for POSIglaze and POSIone is A2, S1, D0 rating which means that means POSIglaze and POSIone will not be any contribution for spreading fire.
The national classifications do not automatically equate with the transposed classifications in the ‘BS EN 13501-1 Classification column, therefore products cannot typically assume a European class unless they have been tested accordingly.— Fire Safety Approved Document B, P191.
What is the Euroclass system?
The European classification standard EN 13501-1:2018 ranks construction materials in seven classes with regards to their fire behavior: A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F. The same document also gives a classification of these materials with regards to smoke development (s1, s2 and s3) and the formation of flaming droplets/particles (d0, d1 and d2).
1.Fire Behavior
A1 = non-combustible material
A2 = non-combustible (Scotland) and limited combustibility (England and Wales)
B, C, D = ranges from very limited to medium contribution to fire
E, F = high contribution to fire
Smoke Development
S1 = little to no smoke
S2 = quite a lot of smoke
S3 = substantial/heavy smoke
Formation of Flaming Droplets/Particles
D0 = no droplets
D1 = some droplets
D2 = quite a lot
Pure Vista’s rating for POSIglaze and POSIone is A2, S1, D0 rating which means our product is classed as non-combustible with little to no smoke and no droplets within the first 10 minutes of fire exposure.
That means POSIglaze and POSIone will not be any contribution for spreading fire.
