10 great reasons to buy ‘Made in Britain’ products

As consumers, we make decisions every day that impact our community, our economy, and our environment. One of the most significant choices we can make is to buy products manufactured right here in Britain.

Despite the common misconception that Britain no longer manufactures products, the UK remains a major manufacturing country. In fact, according to the latest data, the UK ranks eighth in the world in manufacturing output and our manufacturers are pretty innovative as well. The latest Global Innovation Index ranks the UK as the fifth most innovative in the world.

Whilst there are many reasons why you should prioritise buying British, Professor Chris Harrop OBE has put together his top 10 reasons why you should buy Made in Britain.

1. Economic prosperity

When you buy British, you're investing in the local economy. British manufacturers employ thousands of people, from skilled labourers to administrative staff, and your purchases help sustain these jobs. Keeping production within our borders means that money stays in the local economy, creating a positive multiplier effect. This effect supports local businesses, contributes to community development, and enhances overall economic stability. It's a win-win: consumers get high-quality products, and communities thrive.

Every morning I am reminded of this when I shower with my Eco Warrior soap bar from Made in Britain member Little Soap Company, a multi-award winning and certified B Corp business.

2. Environmental sustainability

Environmental concerns are at the forefront of our minds for many of us today. By buying British-made products, you contribute to environmental sustainability in several ways. Firstly, locally produced goods require less transportation, leading to lower carbon emissions. Secondly, British manufacturers are subject to stringent environmental regulations, ensuring that production processes are more eco-friendly. Thirdly, British manufacturers are amongst the most innovative in the world and often produce world class environmental products. Ultimately, buying locally helps reduce your carbon footprint and supports a cleaner, greener planet.

Just look at Made in Britain member Kensa, their ground source heat pumps are designed to work for all building types, whether it’s a high-rise flat, a new-build property, or one of the millions of existing buildings across the UK.

3. Job creation and security

Manufacturing is a significant source of employment in Britain. When you choose products made in Britain, you are supporting jobs across lots of different sectors, from products for animal and pets, for the garden, for health and beauty, for music, and for playing toys and games. This support helps ensure job security for thousands of families. Moreover, thriving local industries can create new jobs, especially apprenticeships, reduce unemployment rates, and foster a stronger, more resilient economy.

One great example is Rearo, who offer free driving lessons as part of their apprenticeship scheme, Rearo offer free driving lessons. Lessons are held within working hours to ensure apprentices can attend without sacrificing personal time.

4. Quality and safety standards

British manufacturers adhere to high quality and safety standards, ensuring that the products you buy are reliable, safe, and of the highest quality. Regulations in Britain are stringent, covering everything from materials used to the conditions in which products are made. This attention to detail and commitment to quality often results in products that are superior to their imported counterparts. When you buy British, you can trust that you are getting a product that meets rigorous standards and supports environmental, safety and ethical practices.

The Made in Britain Code of Conduct requires all members to agree to uphold a set of core principles and business standards.

5. Supporting small businesses, family businesses, and entrepreneurs

The British economy is home to a vibrant community of small businesses, family businesses and entrepreneurs. By choosing British-made products, you are supporting these innovators and helping them grow. These businesses often bring unique and high-quality products to the market, offering consumers a diverse range of choices. Supporting these businesses also encourages innovation and competition, driving the creation of even better products and services. Your purchase can make a significant difference to a small business, helping it to thrive and contribute to the local economy.

A great example is George Barnsdale a 140-year-old manufacturer of  timber windows and doors has its with 5th generation of family running it with managing director, Tom Wright

6. Preserving cultural heritage and craftsmanship

Britain has a rich history of craftsmanship and artisanal skills that have been passed down through generations. When you buy locally made products, you help preserve these traditions and support artisans who are dedicated to their craft. From handmade pottery and textiles to traditional foods and beverages, buying British-made products keeps our cultural heritage alive. This preservation of skills and traditions adds value to the products and fosters a sense of pride and identity within communities.

This short film from Dartington Crystal shows this in action brilliantly:

7. Enhanced community well-being

Supporting local manufacturers and businesses fosters a sense of community and belonging. It strengthens social bonds and creates a supportive network where people look out for each other. Local businesses are more likely to reinvest in the community, whether through charitable donations, sponsorship of local events, or collaboration with other local enterprises. This reinvestment contributes to the overall well-being and prosperity of the community.

The work that Imperial Polythene, a manufacturer of sacks, bags, tubing, and sheeting does in this area is very impressive. Their Imperial Community Impact Fund offers between £500 to £1,000 per project to inspire and empower local organisations working in the areas of the environment, sustainability, creativity and local problem-solving.

8. Ethical and fair labour practices

Labour standards in Britain are among the highest in the world. When you buy British-made products, and in particular products from Made in Britain members you can be confident that the workers who made them are treated fairly and work in safe conditions. This assurance is not always guaranteed with imported goods, where labour practices can be questionable. By choosing products made in Britain, you are supporting ethical practices and promoting fair treatment of workers. The work that Made in Britain member Marshalls plc has done to tackle modern slavery all over the country is award-winning

9. Reduced dependency on imports

Relying heavily on imported goods can make a country vulnerable to external disruptions, such as political instability, trade disputes, or global supply chain issues, we all remember the disruption in 2021 when then Suez Canal was blocked by the Ever Given container ship.  By supporting local production, we reduce our dependency on imports and enhance the country's economic resilience. This self-sufficiency ensures that we have access to essential goods and services, even in times of global uncertainty.

Aron Walstow from Doncaster Cables explains this well:

10. Personal connection and transparency

When you buy locally made products, you often have the opportunity to connect with the people behind the products. Whether it's visiting a local market, speaking with a local producer, or touring a manufacturing facility, these connections offer transparency and trust. You can learn about the production process, ask questions, and gain a deeper appreciation for the products you buy. This personal connection fosters a sense of trust and loyalty between consumers and producers.

Made in Britain member Carl Stuart Tailors has operated from Ossett in West Yorkshire since 1929 making suits has a new shop and showroom under the very same roof as where the garments are created by hand, from scratch.

Buying British-made products is a powerful way to support our economy, protect the environment, ensure quality and safety, preserve cultural heritage, and

promote ethical practices. It strengthens our communities, fosters innovation, and enhances our overall well-being. By making a conscious choice to buy locally, we can create a positive impact that benefits everyone.

Next time you're shopping, consider the many advantages of choosing products made in Britain. Your purchase not only supports local businesses and workers but also contributes to a sustainable and thriving future for all, and the best way to be certain is to look for the official Made in Britain mark.
