18th Edition Wiring Regulations: one year on

IT'S been just over a year since BS7671:2018 18th Edition Wiring Regulations came into practice. The regs require ‘cables to be adequately supported against their premature collapse in the event of a fire. This applies throughout the installation and not just in escape routes’ (BS7671: 2018, JAN 2019). Here’s a recap of what these regulations meant for LINIAN and the wider market:

2019 and the release of the new wiring regulations coincided with the launch of LINIAN SuperClip and T&E Clip products as compliant methods for fixing SWA, conduit, multiple cables and Flat Twin and CPC Cables. There’s been a huge demand for these products, and the feedback from installers has been incredibly positive. The success of these and new to market products in 2019 indicates that the changes to regulations on terms of mitigating the risk of premature collapse are being adhered to by many installers.

The rise in Electric Vehicle Charging and incentives to install EV charging points on commercial and domestic premises have prompted the release of BS7671:2018 Amendment 1. The UK government is investing £400 million to accelerate the roll-out of charging infrastructure to help meet its target of at least 50 per cent of new car sales to be ultra-low emission by 2030.

The amendment follows advances in technology that were not available when BS 7671:2018 published, enabling a more practical solution for the installation of charging points. Functionality built directly into charging equipment uses existing technology, but employed in a new way, allowing charging points to be deployed more widely than ever before.

The updated Section 722 will make installing charging points quicker and easier and will reduce the cost of installations for both installers and consumers.

In 2019, LINIAN found that installers were choosing to utilise our Super Clips on many EV installations as an elegant and architectural method of running cables with a pleasing aesthetic. Inspired by this, LINIAN is currently developing more products to assist with this sector of the market in 2020.
